Information about creating and submitting sitemaps

Author: Suman // Category:

Well if you dont know what a site map is, then here is a brief introduction to it

What's a Sitemap?
In general, there are two types of sitemaps.

  1. The first type of sitemap is a HTML page listing the pages of your site - often by section - and is meant to help users.
  2. XML Sitemaps - usually called Sitemaps, are a way for you to give Google information about your site. In its simplest terms, a Sitemap is a list of the pages on your website.
  3. Creating and submitting a Sitemap helps make sure that Google knows about all the pages on your site, including URLs that have errors.

Sitemaps are very helpful particularly when your blog or website has
  • Flash content or Ajax code.(Because bots find difficult to crawl through these pages)
  • If your site is new, then googlebot will have a difficult time to find your blog...so submitting sitemaps will help googlebots
  • Your site has a large archive of content pages that are not well linked to each other, or are not linked at all
Adding Sitemap to Web Master Tools

  • First register to google web master tools and verify your site.
  • After verification go to Sitemaps and click on add sitemap.
  • Then select Add general web sitemap.
  • Then open a new tab then go to your blog.
  • There will be RSS feed button in top right corner (in Internet Explorer).
  • Click on it and copy the code

  • Then paste it in my sitemap url in google webmaster tools

  • Then click on Add general web sitemap and your site map will be submitted to google

  • It will take 1 or 2 days to analyze your pages and it will give you the all the information about crawl errors and about indexing etc
